Hi Everyone

Slowly but surely I am getting my new tank ready. I have removed some dreaded old slate that was poorly stuck on the back wall and replaced it with a new 3D background (photos soon :)). I also have a mix of red and black coloured sand which I hope will give an interesting effect :)

I purchased an external canister filter and the website suggested it is suitable for tanks up to 500 litres (mine is just under 500 litres). However when it arrived it seemed massive and so I looked up the model on the filter's brand website and it suggests the same model is suitable for tanks up to 800 litres. This seems to be a significant difference and I am worried it will be too strong for my size tank.

I am hoping that it will be ok and I can disperse the water flow enough that it won't stress out my lotls. I have contacted the supplier I purchased the filter from to clarify. I really hope that I can either exchange it or it will be fine and a little disbursement of the water flow will solve any issues.

Any thoughts?

you can never have too big a filter on an axolotl tank :p lol
it should have flow adjustments, reduce flow and add a spray bar to it and you should be fine
if you dont have a spray bar point the outlet nozzle into something like plants, a bath poof, or something else to spread it out
axolotls have a very high bio load and so far mine is fine with the flow rate as long as he has an area to go hide from it in
I made him a little cave from stackable rocks directly below my return on my HOB filter, its hits the rocks and he has a huge area of almost no flow to hang out in
you can see the rocks on the right and the filter right above it
my filter is rated for 50 gallons and the thank is only 20 :p

Thanks :) I am pretty sure it has a spray bar that came with the filter so I will make sure to use it :)
