Hi
Just bought a good size fluval tank. (vicenza 180).
Question is that it came with a fluval 205 filter. I was originally using an undergravel filter in my last tank.
Is the 205 filter too powerful creating large currents.

Tank is for 2 Cynops Orientalis.

Cheers for any help / set up ideas

Is 180 the volume of the tank? Because with that volume i wouldn´t use a filter at all....it´s completely unnecessary and redundant. In fact it´s counterproductive since the current is undesirable for this species, it will consume energy and generate heat...best avoid all that.

To add to what Azhael said, with that much volume, and only 2 newts, you won't really need a filter. You can provide adequate water parameters just with water changes, and maybe a couple of plants.

You could also have a look at sponge filters. I have Sera ones in my tanks and they are really good - probably quite weak filtration but they keep the water aerated and moving a little a bit without making a strong current. I found that without a filter there was always a film on the surface. You can buy these filters cheaply on ebay.

Thankyou for your prompt replies.
Ok ive set up the tank without filter. I know it is a big tank for 2 newts. I have plumbed in my under gravel filter powered by an airstone just to keep things moving. Off to get some new live plants and some more land area for them. ive kept the, in good nick for a while now just know i can improve. the set up.
Cheers guys

In my opinion you should use the filter because it will increase the quality of the water. Fluval x05 series as a controllable water flow so you could make it run under a very low flow. I don't know exactly how was that filter assembled to be a undergravel filter but the standard one as big output and input holes so you should be aware of using it with the standard flow flow parts. I think it is a waste to just trow away such good filter
