I found this site by searching "Newts Salamanders" on Google, and looks like I couldn't have found a better place to end up. As a kid, I always thought the idea of having newts or salamanders as pets was an awesome one, but my parents never saw it the same way. Now I'm out on my own, and I'm trying to persue something that I've always wanted to do.
I've recently been thinking of finding a new pet(s), but wanted something a little more interesting/"exotic" than your average dog (which my girlfriend and I have two of) or cat. My older brother had a 20 gallon tank that, for years, housed guppies, but he left them with my parents when he moved out on his own. They slowly died off, and my father finally took the few remaining fish and put them into a much smaller desk tank, and drained the larger one. So now, I can easily get my hands on the 20 gallon tank as it's currently just sitting in a closet.
My initial thought was to either do fish or a lizard. I've made several trips to PetsMart and PetCo and have looked at the different varities of salt water fish I could buy as well as several Bearded Dragons, Anoles and an assortment of frogs. Nothing really jumped out at me, and then I thought about newts and salamanders. I hadn't thought about them in years, and when the lightbulb went off inside my head, I knew that's what I was going to do.
So now, I'm here. Doing what I can to get as much information as possible. Now, here's where your input could help. I'm obviously starting with a 20 gallon tank, and I currently have no newts or salamanders. I would like to build a semi-aquatic tank, and would like to do it fully custom. Since I don't have the little buggers yet, I have plenty of time to accumulate the parts that I need and can take as much time as needed to set it up. I would also prefer breeds that are smaller in size (around the Chinese Fire Belly Newt size). What should I consider that would flourish in this environment and be about the size that I'm looking for?
I'm sure that I will have plenty of questions to come, but as this has been plenty wordy already, I'll find the appropriate section of the forum to bombard with questions later.
