New shanjing with my ltc

I started them off on pond water and microworm, moving up to daphnia and then small whiteworm as soon as they were big enough. I then started introducing frozen bloodworm and wiggling them about on a stick.

Eventually they started eating non-moving frozen bloodworm from a pile in the corner - this made things so much easier as they could be fed twice daily with a large amount of food with minimal hassle or worrying about cultures. Once they were big enough they got chopped earthworms too.

I think your critter filled tank is probably the best way to start - its always a bit of a pain producing enough small livefood. I found things became significantly easier once they were large enough to eat whiteworm and bloodworm.

It never rains it pours....I've been so focused on the shanjing and their eggs that I haven't been spending much time on the others. So today,I looked around the big Verrucosus tank (75 gallon aquatic) and ....eggs! All over. Now this pair has laid just 4 times in 7 years, and without one fertile egg, so I'm not too hopeful this time. But I've taken a couple dozen out and will leave the rest in. Could be an interesting fall if they are fertile as well!.

Sounds like you got your hands full! I wish you luck (especially with the verr).

I expect to see tons of updates! ;)

WOW that is REALLY cool... i cant even get my fire bellied newts to breed... i really want a pair of tylototriton Kweichowensis, but shanjings are real cool too. The whole genus is cool:p

Those are beautiful newts, and an awesome tank!

Well last week was a bit of a bummer. For starters,I came home from a three day trip, turned on the light and found one of my shanjing dead.It was the new female that had laid all the eggs. She had been agitated, but I put it down to egg laying etc. So sad. Perhaps the stress of egg laying plus a new habitat was too much? She was otherwise healthy. I really felt terrible for her.

As for the eggs, some seemed to turn opaque, and some seemed to disappear.Eaten? Hatched? I'm not sure.I can't see any fry at all although the bottom of the pond is full of gravel and other small stuff and I know they just lie there for while. The ones I took out don't seem to be hatching.I did see the little embryo but now they seem to be carmel coloured eggs . But some may have hatched.Again, there is stuff to hide in.

The verrucosus eggs seem to be mostly duds, although a few have not gone fuzzy,so maybe? Groan.

Otherwise, everyone is healthy and we are getting through a very hot summer here in Northern Ontario.Thank goodness for cool basements.

Oh..and I have a bunch of c.cyanurus larvae doing great.

Aw that's a shame about the shanjing... I was following this in hopes of testing the US import/export thing :) and hoping to get a couple if you decided to let any go  Did the other female every lay or do you think just the new one that died?

Keeping my fingers crossed on your verr.

It's been a trying year for me and my various tylo. The short version is non of the shanjing eggs survived..despite a bunch thatwere obviously fertile. Many seemes to just disappear so I wonder if they were eaten? Can't say for sure. The Verr. eggs were duds. This is the 4th time my long term pair had duds. I have another young pair of Verr. that I hope to mix with my two monsters in the next few months..but they are still small enought to be eaten!

I'll talk about my other trials when I'm done dealing with them.
