Hey guys,

I was at the annual reptile show today and picked up a young axolotl. It wasn't a planned purchase. I talked to the guy a little and from everything he had told me, axolotls were not difficult to keep. On top of that, the little guy was a mere $15. So, being the irresponsible person that I am, I bought one instead of the thousand crickets I was originally planning on(its only a few bucks more at the local reptile shop anyways).
ANYways...the little guy is fascinating. I have him set up in a temporary home(its a large custom made hard plastic almost fishbowl-type enclosure). He's got a great appetite, he's gobbled up a housefly and some fruit flies already.
As soon as my turtles are ready for a larger tank(within the 3-6 months), the little axolotl will be going into the 20 gallon tank and I'll pick up a couple more, and possibly try my hand at breeding. At least thats the current best-scenario plan.

I also keep bearded dragons, a couple snakes, some exotic mantids, four aquatic turtles, a leopard gecko, and a few tarantulas. I used to keep fish before all of that.

So thats my story. I hope to learn a lot while I'm here!

Thanks!
Andrew

You're the one!

NO WAY!! You picked up that young gold axolotl at the show in Sacramento?? Dang. I had my eye on him and when i looked away, it was gone. Well, i wont be bitter. That must mean that your in the sacramento area though. Where abouts? I'm from Cameron Park. If your looking for more axolotls i have seen them at the Pet Club in Elk Grove. They are expensive though (sometimes in the $30.00 range). Welcome to the forum. It really is amazing. Let me know if there is anything i can help you with or if you have any good leads on where newts and salamanders can be found.

Again... Welcome!

LOL, small world, eh? I even walked around for a while and bought other stuff before finally coming back to buy him. Are you sure it was from the same booth? I got mine from East Bay Vivarium. They had three young ones and an adult out when I was there.
If I buy some more axolotls, I'll probably try and get them from someone on this forum before paying $30 for some pet shop ones. Does that pet shop sell adults or just young ones? I wouldn't mind paying $30 for an adult.

Anyways, I won't hesitate to ask any questions when needed. :bowl:

Thanks!
Andrew
