Does anyone know roughly how many species of newts are available in the UK and if it isnt that many then what these species are? i only know of fire belly, ribbed and marbled as these are the only ones ive seen for sale. quite a few people in this forum have loads of different species but they seem to all be in america. the species that these people have - are they all ones available to everyone or do you have to have a special permit? i dont know the latin names of things so they are probably salamanders as well.

The only newt/salamander species you need a licence to keep in the UK are the native crested newts (Triturus cristatus).

There are loads of species being kept in the UK, but you won't find many for sale in pet shops. People who breed them will quite often have spare animals for sale or trade.

If you're after a particular species, you could try placing an advert in the 'wanted' section here.

do people look at the wanted section? cos i would have thought that people who have something would put it in the for sale section.

im thinkin of gettin a paddle tailed newt or spotted or marbled newt because i found a pet shop that sells these. they said as well they will be getting more species end of january.

Jenny,
People do look at the wanted section, there are a lot of breeders out there that are willing to part with surplus stock but don't advertise them.
As Caleb said there are a lot of species being kept in the UK that are not available at standard pet shops so you would need to go to a specialist or a breeder, have a look in the testimonials section to find a good specialist amphibian dealer.
