I have always kept my axolotls on sand substrate but a few months ago decided to try keeping them on just plain glass. I found that the axolotls toes were worn down and kept getting sores. I treated them and swapped new axolotls to the tank to ascertain whether it would happen to others in the same tanks and it did. I then put others in separate tanks with just glass bases also and the same problem occurred. I returned to using sand. I was wondering if others have had this problem also?

Mine have only ever been on glass. No sores. Perfectly healthy.

Mine's got no substrate and he's perfectly fine. He's got plenty of other surfaces to explore such as bog wood, rocks, plants and ornamental bridges but he seems perfectly healthy.
