Not Eating and Loosing Weight!

Hi All,

Im starting to worry about Willy. Today is day SEVEN since he has eaten last, and mind you he wasnt eating much then either.

The reason Im a bit worried is because he is obviously loosing weight and looking on the ILL side.

I have noticed his nails turning even blacker and longer and the stripe on the top of his tail now turning black.

He has a bloot shot look under his skin and he is very lathargic (compared to his usual strong and athletic ways)

Any ideas on whats wrong with me boy?

Mind you, BOB is fine and eating well with no problems. The PH is norm, all the testing levels are fine too.

I have tried a vary of foods, meal worms, beef heart, ox heart and crickets and pellets.

I guess I will just keep him in the fridge, he aint eaten for almost nine days now.

you say he has blood shot skin... what temp is your water? im sorry i cant help much, it may be bacterial, best to keep him in the fridge for now

If his gills and fin are changing color, it sounds like it may be septicemia. Have you taken him to a vet?

Sharn - The water temp in the tank is a constant 18 degrees, the water in the fridge (where he currently is is 9 degrees)

Joan - His gills have not changed colour or texture at all, but his skin was blotchy (he is white axo) But the blotchy has gone today but he still isnt eating. Im not too sure that the few vets we have here in Cairns will know anything about Axolotls?

Im extremely worried about him not eating now more than anything, what is the longest that an axo can NOT eat for? (its been 11 days now)

Cheers

My apologies: I read nails as gills. Axolotls can go months if it's cold without eating. If the blotchy is gone, I'd keep offering food. The fridge is a good place for him especially if he's not eating.

GREAT Thats kind of what I needed to hear - ( the not eating for a long period of time)

The blotchyness and bloodshoot problem as gone away since I have had him in the fridge. I will keep him in there for a little while longer. I offer him food everyday, but so far no joy.

just a quick question again...........under his feet where his nails have turned black, the blackness seems to travel up the toes.....is this normal on someone elses white axo?

Cheers

I'm guessing he's leucistic (white, but with cute beady little black eyes and little black dots on his head)? My Javier, also a leucy, had black tips to his toes when he was living in the fridge for a couple of weeks, but his toes have returned to white now that he's back in his tank.

i wouldnt worry too much about them changing from black to white. my full grown leucistic female had white toes and the boy has black...

WOW! You guys were right! BOB is back on track now with his health, and yes, his toes have returned to just the tips black!

He is back in the tank and eating again. Thank you all for your help. He went 3 weeks without eating in the end!

Cheers
