# of axolotls in 20 gallon tank?

I just ordered a bunch of basic aquarium supplies (filter, test kits, sand, hides, fake plants) and the tank itself, which is 30" x 12" x 12". I know that length is better than height, since axolotls like to crawl around the floor rather than swim up. Still, I'm unsure whether this 30" long tank is enough for 2 adult axolotls, or just one. I have no plans for breeding, and would prefer getting adults from the start, to skip the hassle of the young cannibalistic stage.

If I have enough room for two, could I introduce both to the tank at once, or buy one and then the other at separate times?

20 gallons/ 30" long is good for 2 adults. I have heard that even a 10 gallon is fine for two adults! They don't seem to move around much (and aren't cannibalistic like you mentioned )
Personally, I think you could introduce the two at the same time, but see what others think on here.
Make sure your tank is fully cycled first, it will save you a huge headache!

Thanks for the reply! I've seen so many differing opinions regarding tank size and # of axolotls that I figured I could pop a question for my own situation. I plan on getting a leucistic and a golden albino, and head over to the sales forum once the tank's ready for 'em.

Yes, I'm certainly looking into tank cycling while I wait for my stuff to come in. I've kept African cichlids before, but that was a very long time ago and my parents mostly managed the tank. This will be my first time keeping up with an aquatic pet all on my own. I'm excited and a bit nervous haha.

I think that tank size is only suitable for one axolotl. I have one axolotl in a tank this size & there definitely isn't room for a second. You would need a 30 gallon for 2 axolotls.

I wouldn't put 2 in a 20 gallon. I have a 20 gallon long and I'm looking at my tiny guy thinking....how is this going to be big enough when you are grown?? Just because you "can" put 2 in, doesn't mean you should.
