I am reading about the olm on Wikipedia.
Apparently these incubate for 140 days and take years to grow, they are blind, can not metamorphosize. Also they can go 10 years without eating, and they seem really cool.
Does anyone else know about the olm? Does anyone keep them?

This is a really cool question..Olms are amazing salamanders, they stay neotenic and get to about a foot long.i had one when I was a kid. They used to be for sale in every pet shop.i didn't keep it cool enough and it fought its way out one night and died. Ever since then I've always wondered why I can't find another one. What I won't give to have him now..

No you didn´t....you might have had some of the american cave specialists like Eurycea spelaea, but you definitely did not have an olm.

I thought that's what it was but I'm not positive, sort of looked like one,but it didn't last long,I'm positive of that.

Well, now I'm wondering what kind of pinkish aquatic salamander did I buy back then?,,,I'm talking in 1964...

The olm is a european species, Proteus anguinus. It´s also part of a different family (proteidae) than the american cave specialists which are plethodontids.

Ok,,I answered my own question ,with your help. Yes you may be right,I think a grotto salamander might be it. Thanks

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
