Juju died today. I haven't been able to find myaxin or protozin to treat his fungal infection, so have been using half doses of melafix with limited success. The main problem has been that my filter is •••• and I can't afford a new one. I've come to the conclusion that if I can't afford to care for my babies I have to give them away. It's only Aztec left now, and I'm giving her to a friend who has heaps of aquariums and will be able to provide a better life. This doesn't make me happy, but I know I have to do it

I've put Aztec in a bucket and will change the water daily and keep medicating her on the melafix. I'll continue to look for the proper meds in the mean time. Does anyone in Sydney know where I can get some? My poor baby

Try keeping her cool. Its harder to establish an infection when its cold.

well, she's made it through today, i'll keep changing the water in her tub daily and hope she makes it. though it's sweltering in sydney these days, my house is superbly insulated and her water doesn't get very warm. no room in the fridge for a lotl, i'm afraid...

Katy -

I'm sorry to hear about your loss. I hope Aztec comes out OK.

This seems like a lot of work, but if you want to keep her cooler and don't have room in the fridge, try frozen water bottles. In the summer months, I had 4 frozen bottles (20oz soda bottles) that I used - tossing one in and replacing it when it melted. Bags of ice work a little better if you put the cubes in a plastic bag.

sorry to hear of your loss too,
i know it'd cut me up if one of my axies died.
although the way i feel today they'll probably out-live me!

Well, Aztec died this morning too. I doubt the frozen water bottles would have helped, but even if they could have, I got the messages too late.

Maybe I'll get some more lotls some time, but they'll never be the same as my babies

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
