I stated in another thread that I just bought my first S.s. salamandra. Where I am located they are hard to come by, and even harder to find a healthy specimen. I bought one about a week ago and have him in a 20 gallon tank that he seems to really enjoy. He is very active, loves feeding time, and travels from hide to hide.

My question is, do salamandra NEED to be kept in pairs? I've heard mixed answers about this. It might before I would be able to get another. He seems happy and healthy alone.

It is really up to you. The main factors to consider are tank size, food supply and so on. Newts and salamanders, generally speaking, do not get "lonely" and do very well singly.

Thank you for the reply. I think in the future I'd like to get another one, but I'm very happy with just one for now. They are fascinating little buggers
