Hey everyone,

Around my house in the Bay Area, I often see slender salamanders. When it gets moist and green, which is has been recently in the area, I see TONS of slender salamanders. Is it possible to create an outdoor enclosure or area in the backyard for them? My backyard is right next to a dry creek that serves as a habitat for Batrachoseps . So can I create an area in the garden with cover objects for these salamanders? I do not use insecticides, but is fungicide okay?

I doubt anyone has tried this but I'd love to see if you;re able to contain them successfully outdoors. If I can find some excess larvae of a terrestrial salamander, I am going to grow them out and try keeping them in my back yard but your ambitions are even higher!

If you dig down and put a box underneath the soil, go for it! The box is to make sure that they don't burrow out

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
