My axolotl is in a 40 breeder and my family was telling me to get some life into the tank. I had 3 mountain minnows before and my axie had eaten one. Knowing that they are schooling fish, I purchased 6 more to keep them happy. I also got zebra danios because they are hardy fish that could school with my minnows. My mom got me some pristella tetras. These guys are extremely docile and none of my fish seem to bother my axie. Has anyone had this happen to them? If so, what fish have you put in with your axie? Please no internet abuse as I am new and still learning everyday.
Thanks!

I have 3 axies and a plecostomus and some azteca hyalella. But just learnt that Axolotls do best with their own kind and not others. Sadly :( . I love the idea thoe of having peaceful tank mates. Your tank must be beautiful.

Small "peaceful" fish might nip at there gills in curiosity and really hurt your beloved axie.

So I am now in the hunt for a new home fore my sucki-sucki fish

I try to balance the aquarium so that there are fish only on the top half of the aquarium so that they have s decreased chance of nipping gills. The only fish I am concerned about are the zebra danios as they are very hyper, but they usually are surface fish. The mountain minnows are usually are on the surface as well. My tetras are slow fish so I am not concerned.

hate to break it to you but the reason your tetras haven't been bothering your axolotl is its probably too cold for them to be active and eventually they may die because of it. Plecos are probably one of the worse fish options for axolotls. White cloud minnows are considered the better option because they tolerate the cold very well and are good snacks for axolotls. No matter what you put in remember it may end up as food so anything with a rigid dorsal spine (most catfish like plecos, corys etc) can get lodged in an axolotls mouth and kill it.

Axolotls cannot be part of a 'community' tank - they will either eat the fish or the fish will attack their gills.

As Boomsloth pointed out, those are inadequate conditions for the tetras. Please do the responsible thing and re-house them apropriately.
There are some invertebrates that can be housed with axolotls, like cherry shrimp and small snails like Physa and Physella. Also, i understand the desire to see a communal tank with a variety of species, but a personal whim like that should never come before the well-being of the animals.

A part of my goal was for the fish to be a snack for him as well as for he aesthetics. I will see about relocating my tetras, but I am little short on cash and at the place where I got them, they don't take animals back. The only other option is to get a dedicated fish tank but as I said, money is tight.

You might also try finding another hobbyist that will take them in.

Alright, I will see, one of my friends is thinking of getting one so I might give them to him.

Ghost shrimp ! They eat and clean blood worms and a I eats them but usualy can't catch them

My friend will not take them in right now, but he ate 2 of my pristella tetras tonight, I witnessed both of them. This leads me to ask, are they healthy for him? He also are a night crawler when I fed him. I feel like he might be over feeding himself... The way he went about dispatching the tetras was actually quite smart, he sat right behind where they were schooling for the night and when one got too close, it was gone, poof. This worked twice until the school of 6 became 4 and no longer was a school.

Is this normal for acids?
Thanks,
Anonymous Axolotl

Axolotls will eat anything that fits into their mouth. They also have a big appetite!
