Hi all

I have set up a tank for 2 axolotls that i will be recieveing *whenever*. Friend is going to give me 2 of his when they spawn, They should spawn mid year as i live in New Zealand (hooray) and thats when its about winter.

Anyways, To get the tank "cycling", (not sure if im using that term right), I've put in 5 tropical yet cold water (they can bear it) pearl danios

They're only an inch right now but im hoping in the 3-4 possible months, that they wil lgrow to at least 2-3"...

ANYWAY.

Im getting the 2 axolotls as Juvinials, and i know they wont be able to eat them at a young age, but will they eat them after growing up? We are going to move them to our tropical tank but it would be nice to have some fish with the axolotls as well :)

Cheers guys

Those danios may look like their bearing it now but the stress it is putting them under will certainly shorten their lives, probably no more than a few months at best. If you want fish in the tank with the axolotls then I recommend White Cloud Minnows, also known as White Cloud Danios. Guppies and rosy reds are some more choices you have. You also have to accept that these WILL become lunch to your axies eventually.

oh no, I havent just chosen tropical fish and chucked them in a cold water tank, that would be very cruel lol.

These fish have been cultured to live in cold water, They usually swim in fast moving rivers.

Hi you may also find that the danios pick at the axies gills and even small axies can eat big meal lol

cheers

Have a go at the sticky here on the forums on this topic. It is the culmination of years of experience by a good chunk of the membership here.

But, as stated by the others, fish in an axolotl tank invariably end up as a snack sooner or later.

I knew axolotls eat anything that can fit in their mouth, but i was hoping that since they grew up together, they might live with each other.

Guess not, They'll just be moved into the tropical tank ;)

A pity the whitebait season only runs aug to nov, a mess of whitebait would have kept the tank ticking over, and once the axies arrive, make a nice fritter once no longer needed.
