Pest control visiting my apartment...

So I just got a notice that pest control is coming by to treat the apartment.

On the notice they asked that all fish tanks to be covered and have any air pumps turned off . I've got cooling fans on Hiccup's tank, so I'm guessing they'd have to be off for the few hours that they'll need.

My main worry is should I be evacuating my amphibians (hiccup + 2 frogs) since they absorb more through their skin than regular reptiles (aka my geckos and snakes).

I'm not really sure how to evacuate a 9 inch axxie , last time I had to move him I used a large pickle jar when he was a little smaller.

Just get a Tupperware container, and use some of the aquarium water from it. Tupperware container is big enough for an 9inch axolotl, and once your done, put the water that you got from your tank back into the tank. I'll link a appropriately sized Tupperware here

I just had this happen as well, it wasn't really that big of a deal. I just wrapped my tanks in plastic wrap and turned off the pumps. Just be sure its only a couple hours. They do still need air :)

Re: Pet control visiting my apartment...

Eek yeah I actually had to have pest control spray my apartment upwards of 5 times over a couple months. I'm not saying I'm a pro or that I really know what I'm doing but PLEASE make sure to cover the tank even if you take the axolotls out! From what I understand whatever they spray gets in the air and will fall into the tank.

Personally I left my axolotls in the tank, unplugged the filter and wound the plug up and put the plug on top of the tank lid. I then put a towel doubled over on top of the tank, then put a garbage bag over the top of the towel to be sure that nothing could penetrate the towel, and duct taped the garbage bag all the way around the tank including my hob filter (!) to create a complete seal all the way around. I then had to leave the apartment for 8 hours (I had to go to school and work) so the filter was left off for this time. I undid everything and plugged the filter back in as soon as I got home and everything was fine every single time I followed this procedure.

I'm sure there are other ways to do this but I'm pretty sure you need the tank covered or you're in for trouble. I'm sure you could remove the axolotls but if the tank is covered correctly I think it would just stress them out unnecessarily.

Thanks for your thoughts Allied123! Could I leave the HOB running even though I'll have it covered? I don't want to kill off all the healthy bacteria in the filter.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
