I recently visited my local pet shop to reserve another Axie. Last time I visited their Axies seemed to be in lovely condition, I visited today and reserved one however I noticed that while they were all happily active all three they had appeared to have damaged gills. Two were being housed together and I suggested to the woman working they're area that they should seperate the two housed together as they may be nipping each other in the small space and she said she'd speak to someone about arranging that.

The condition of all other animals in the store was fine it just seemed to be the axolotl who were a little worse for wear.

Anyway the point of this post is should I be wary about following through with the reservation given the physical condition of all three Axies? I have invested in a larger tank but I don't want to unintentionally compromise the health of my current Axie...

Chances are the gills will grow back over time, it may be caused by nipping, or bad water quality due to the axies being crammed into a small tank. You should be quarantining new additions for at least 28 days though before introducing them to current axies to make sure they aren't carrying anything.

I agree with Sammy , yeah and also i didnt even knew last time i bought an axolotl and it has ammonia burned gills , until i registered on this forums, The gills will grow back in time.:D

It's hard to house them together because they can unpredictability nip at each other. If the shop is doing everything else right I wouldn't be too worried - unfortunate accidents happen. Many people here house multiple axolotls in the same tank and there is nothing wrong with that - but accidents do happen since axolotls tend to try to eat first and think later.

Brilliant thank you! I was just a little concerned, visited the shop again today and the reserved Axie (which I have named Data) appears to be happy and healthy enough. I have a separate tank set up ready for him to stop in for a bit before I let him and Spock finally meet! Thank you! ^_^
