I have this little axe I got from the pet store down the road and to my horror found it in a terrible state and since my 2 adult axe have always been very healthy I am a bit lost as to what is going on with this little one. .when I questioned the clerk about its condition ( I even questioned weather it was a axe at all). the pet store clerk said " oh it is, it just was getting beat up by the water dog(?) that was housed with it". they where the only two in a 20 gal tank and she said they had him for 6 months. It is so tiny.it looked near dead so of course I couldn't leave it there. so got a 5 gal set up and furnished it as I have the large ones furnished. I do live in Hawaii so it is a challenge keeping the water cool. though he looks better today (two weeks later) I wonder if I am doing enough. two limbs are regenerating and all but a stub of a gill was left, they are also coming back slowly. what concerns me is his jaw and head. it appears lopsided and swollen. he does eat red worms , home grown by myself. any thoughts. the first photos are when I first got it and then a week and a half later. sorry if I mixed the files, but I think you can see by the difference. The last photo is of my adults, Omar and Felisha. and the little one is Izzy

Firstly I hope you didn't pay for the axolotl & that they gave it to you in the best interests of the animal.
Otherwise you're supporting their mistreatment of creatures because after all someone eventually bought it :(

I would keep it separated & not in a pretty aquarium with sand - keeping itbin a plain tub with a basic shelter will allow you to see if it's eating & pooping - daily 100% water changes will give it the best chance of recovering if it's suffered ammonia burns from poor water & Almond leaves or black tea can help with limb regeneration (add it to the daily water changes)

I'm also very happy to hear you have kept izzy separated from your other axolotls because if he has any kind of infection / parasites or disease it will soon affect your own axolotls.

Good luck I hope your kindness and attention will help him recover :)
If something does go wrong and he doesn't recover at least you tried & gave him his best chance - sometimes they are just too far gone to recover & it's heartbreaking - I can't rescue axolotls anymore I have seen so many suffering that I am taking a break from them for a while.

Please keep us updated on how you go with izzy.
