Pictures and questions!

petshops often put animals in small cages (look at the puppies in little window displays for example) which is fine for them because they're never there for very long before they're taken to new homes

Hi
I am doing a study on axolotls at a zoo. some of the black axos have yellow patches on them that have apparently developed over the years. One has an almost speckled appearance. i was wondering if anyone could tell me what they are. they don't seem to affect the axos health in anyway
thanks

Hard to say on such scant information...any chance of a photo?

Black axolotls are black due to a relative excess of melanin with repect to other pigments. The yellow pigment is reduced or absent in these animals (depends on genotype: melanoid vs axanthic).

It's always possible you have perfectly healthy specimen to view that is just one of natures odd tricks. Like I said; guessing here without mmoer info.

My black axi has light grey to whitish spots - lot's of little ones that i spose i could describe as speckles??? She's perfectly fine!!! Probably one of the most healthy axolotls you could get. So i spose it could be the same kind of thing. She developed these speckles over a period of 12 months or so - it wasn't any sudden change. After she layed her eggs yesterday she looked grey all over - but she's back to normal now.

???????
