Hi,

I have one axolotl which is approximately 1 year old. I recently saw some more axolotls in the pet shop, who looked really sad. They were placed in warmed water and really had not enough space. I really want to save them, but I cannot keep them all. I was thinking of buying one, but I'm not sure if I can place a young Axolotl with my older axolotl. The axolotls in the pet shop were approx. 6 cm, my own axolotl is much bigger.

Could this be a problem?

Thanks

Yes, if there is a big size difference you must keep the axolotls separate, otherwise the bigger axolotl can take bites out of the smaller one. If your tank is big enough you could use a tank divider.

I would advise though, not to rescue sick axolotls from pet stores. If people keep buying sick axolotls it doesn't encourage the store to put any effort into making conditions better and you will just get them continuing to buy and maltreat axolotls. Perhaps you could have a word to the manager at the store and let him/her know about the best way to house axolotls?
