Hi,

I would like some advice on a setup I've been thinking about. I have got two juvenile Neurergus strauchii barani here, who are in a setup that consists of nothing but stones, water and a pump.
So I started searching in books for suitable vegetation for a rocky and still kind of moist / near water habitat - I used guides to flora and scientific books e.g. on the Flora of Turkey, of the Mountains of Aladaglari and Erciyes Dagi and I even found some that may suit this setup, but the most important thing I stumpled upon was a picture of some kind of step pool (I think this is the correct term), which I found in a book about european ferns.

This is the picture with the important part marked:

Of course I do not have that large a tank to set up something as detailed and 1:1.
The tank I was planning to do for this idea is based on Mark's Custom Build Aquaria and should have dimensions around 60*60*25 (in cm). It should house around 4-5 barani (will get additional specimen then).

I would, however, need a lot of advice on how or if this could work. I was thinking about limiting the land aread with some stones draped around it, so the sand / soil, wont just flood into the water (as there should be some stream). I am also not really sure as to whether plants can live for longer terms under these conditions.

Some other problems that do not really have anything to do with the setup but are general ones:

1. What, if any, water plants could/should be used in Neurergus setups? In Germany, most keepers follow a strict "no plants" policy, with only stones and water. I do not like it all too much, not only due to aesthatic reasons, but also because I like plants as stabilizers for an eco system, which leads to question
2. Is it possible to influence the setup so it will take more care of itself? Until this point, I basically do a 70% water change every two weeks or so and remove all the poo - in my H. orientalis setup, e.g., the plants and snails remove all of it. I guess in their natural habitats, the streams do take care of most of their waste, but any advice here would be greatly appreciated.
3. What technical stuff should be used? At this moment, I only use a pump/filter as you can get for little money in most pet stores. This one also seems to aerate the water, telling from the bubbles coming out of it. I wasn thinking of using one or two of these pumps and/or maybe a "Luftheber" (don't know the english term, sorry) in the tank that I plan - what are the suggestions of Neurergus keepers here?

That should be pretty much it - any advice, criticism, suggestion whatsoever, also about modifications in that plan etc. would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks everybody and have a nice start into the week.

Greetings from germany,

Jakob

I have a spare tank running at the moment ready for my Laoensis juvs, i have snails in there and you would not believe how much waste they produce.
In my Kaiseri set up i run an external filter with carbonat in it to harden the water, i do this instead of adding limestone. Also regular water changes.I keep easy bunched plants(elodea densa) that are not rooted as i have no substrate.
