Plants for moving water?

Hello all,

I'm setting up my P. labiatus enclosure, and while I have false plants in there for now, I'd like to use some live ones. My C. orientalis tank has java moss, Elodea and pothos, but the Pachytriton's tank has a stronger water flow from his Fluval 1 compared to my Co's box filter.

I find that in my stock guppy tank, java moss that was well rooted before I added a more powerful filter is doing well, but my Elodea isn't.


Any advice for plants that will tolerate the water flow? Or should I not worry as long as they are well-rooted?

what kind of substrate are you using...??? the only plant that i've had trouble with current were my java moss balls... those things kept getting thrown around in the current... also... the java moss needs a little help to root itself into stuff... i tie it down with thread... after the moss will outgrow the thread and will need trimming every once in a wile...

Pothos and java moss will do just fine. I've used fishing line to tie down Java moss. Elodea tends to be a bit more sensitive, and I've never had luck keeping it alive.

A Kaysie already said, you can't go wrong with pothos. Its the only plant I have in my P. labiatus tank. Its free floating, gets almost no light, and is tossed around by the filter. But, its been in there for over a year now and not only is it still alive but its growing - slowley but growing all the same. Oh, and my water temps are almost always right around 65F, so it must not mind the cool, either. Good luck,

I have a piece of peace lilly plant in my p. labiatus' tank, which is doing fine. It is totally submerged, and has been in the tank for about 7 months no problem. It is closer to the out-pour of my filter, and I have not noticed any negative effects.

Pothos grows like a weed in my C. orientalis tank, I have to trim it every couple of months because the roots overgrow the tank completely.

The substrate in my guppy tank is small river stones, I guess they weren't rooting the Elodea very well. Java moss was already rooted to some rocks that I had transplanted there from a previous tank.

I find Elodea in my C.o. tank was well before the pothos started growing... Picky plant.

I guess I will stick to pothos and java moss, I do have a peace lily but it's quite large, even if I spliced it the stalks would be too tall.
