Are there any plants which Tylototriton shanjing particularly likes? Or which do particularly well under Mandarin vivarium conditions?

Any information would be much appreciated.

Any of the wandering jew or pothos will do well in these conditions. If you have a tall tank, you can also use spathophyllums there are many more but these will get you started.

Spiderplants seem to do very well though i tend to find they will do better if in their own pots as you can then give them a bit more water without it affecting the rest of the vivarium.

I also have a very sucessful, extremely quick growing houseplant which i also use in aquatic setups. Unfortunately i can't identify it!

Eggs have been laid on elodea before but java moss was shunned completely.

i can back up the merits of spiderplants, they are very difficult to kill off, thy will take all kinds of substrate including just water! and they can take drying out and over watering.

Mark: post a picture of the plant perhaps we can identify it

Hi William,

Heres a couple of pictures from my Cynops orientalis setup. The thing is that when these plants are kept in sunlight the upper surfaces of the leaves are a purpley red colour. They seem to grow much faster in the water but they stay green.

Hi William,

I'm fairly sure they aren't a tradescanthia species. If its of any help here a couple of pictures where they have attained their proper colour. In the vivarium they always remain green despite growing very well, maybe through a lack of uv and/or something in the soil.

Hi Mark,
That looks like one of the varieties of "wandering jew" Tradescantia zebrina - synonym Zebrina pendula

Hi William and Ed,

Apologies - i'm inclined to believe you are probably correct!

Thanks for your help!

I keep mine in an unlit tank with bark and leaf litter. I used to have them in a lit tank with plants and never saw them. now i see them all the time. It seems to me they are shy of bright light.
