hi everyone in hoping to get an axolotl very soon and im just making sure i have everything right so my axie will like it
i have a question about sand which sand would be better beach sand or river sand from a clean river, i would rinse it and all that to make sure it was cleaned properly i was just wondering if you could get the salt out of the beach sand and if anyone knew if axies liked river sand to beach sand.Hopefully this doesnt sound confusing and i hope some one could answer to my question

Honestly I think you'd be better off just going to the store and buying children's play sand.

However, between the 2 types you mentioned I would go with the river sand. There would always be residual salt in the beach sand no matter how much you rinsed it. Not to mention I think it would really screw with your PH with the amount of crushed shells that would also be present.

The one thing I would be worried most about river sand is the risk of pollutants. The heavier contaminants would settle into the fine sand of the river bottom.

thanks for answering my question i think i will go and try and find some sand in the shops if i cant find any i think i will go and ask mums friend if she uses any chemicals and that on the farm if she does then i wont use the river sand and try to get some aquarium sand from the fish shop when i go to the city

If you have a Bunnings near by they would have just the sand you need. If you have to go to a pet shop though make sure you get sand that is for use in freshwater tanks.

Hi Tonimeloni,

Pool filter sand is another safe option if you are unable to find Children's play sand.

Fresh water aquarium sand sold at petstores is ideal (with a wide range of colour options available - it took me almost half an hour to select a simple buff cream colour ); but is also usually the most expensive type of sand you can buy.

ok thanks guys! now i know what sand im looking for! :D

I have some pebbles on mine and slate, easier for me too clean.Would like to try sand

yea i am still going to put big rocks and stuff like that in the tank i just wanted sand so it was easir to clean where i am going to feed him/her

My tank, and a personal favorite of mine, is just plain tile for a floor. It looks natural, has no risk of being ingested, is a sinch to clean, and is a permanent fixture that I will never have to replace. I just had 2 pieces of tile custom cut to the size of my tank and placed them right in. No debris or waste can become trapped. It's probably as cheap as sand would be, but much simpler.

wow thats such a great idea i never thought of that!
