My axolotl used to be amazingly friendly, shed eat anything, would always swim up to me etc. A couple of weeks ago I moved her tank, so in the summer shed be cooler (have had no temp problems so far) at the same time I put sand in her previously bare bottomed tank, as I'd always read it stressed them out and so it was in the back of my mind
She just stopped eating, I tried every day for 4 days, at which point her back legs and cloaca was swollen, with sand coming out of her, so I knew obviously shed been eating sand. I put her into the fridge for 6 days, I was expecting loads of sand poop in the water and there was some, but it was mostly this clear/white stuff, especially on the last couple of days (It isnt spermy stuff, I looked at pictures and its more blob like/watery). I took her out of the fridge and put her back in her tank (now bare bottomed) and she wouldnt eat. Last night (13th day of not eating) I had bought all different kind of foods to try and tempt her but she wouldnt eat anything.
I woke up excited early this morning to check on her as I saw her swimming around just before I went to bed and thought maybe she'd eat today. As I approached the tank I knew something wasn't right, I moved one of the ornaments to the side and she just floated upside down with loads of stuff coming out of her butt and VERY very very swollen. Im not sure if shes dead, I dont know how to know for sure, I know that sounds stupid. I am totally devastated and will do anything to make her better if it can be done. I need to know why this has happened. I love her and I always, always tried to do the best for her. Can anyone please help me with what is going on?
I called 3 local vets on day 4, and none of them could help me. I cant/have never seen anything that looks like fungus on her, I just tested the water and its 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 20 nitrate. I test often. I always use water conditioner. Shes in a 23g tank, I change the water 40% once a week. Iv'e had her for maybe 6 months. She eats 90% worms from wormsdirect and sometimes frozen bloodworm.
Can anyone please suggest anything I can try?
The LFS I got her from had lots of albinos and wildtypes in the store one day, they had never had axolotls before and weren't sure if they would sell, obviously I bought one.
There was maybe 10-12 albinos in the "batch". We visit the store a lot, as my hubby keeps cichlids and the albinos never sold, not even one in about 7 months. 2 weeks ago when we went, all of them were gone. I asked what happened and they said they had been rehomed.
My husband is suspicious that they "rehomed" them at exactly the point my axolotl from the same batch started getting sick and he isnt convinced sand is the reason. Could she have been carrying some kind of disease that has only just shown itself or is it definitely from being impacted?
