My female axolotl has what seems to be a cut on her head?

also skin flaking near the far right leg, 1cm square roughly, my boyfriend saw this, she is usually really happy swimming about and follows you around her tank, and today she is just in her plant pot, shaded, not coming out even if we show food and she has NEVER done that she would try to eat anything that moves...

I did a 10% water change on Friday. introduced sand about 4weeks ago (cleaned well etc), used 'interpet, bioactive, tapsafe' to treat water, let the water stand for a hour also..

only thing i havnt got is a water tester? As i have been told they are pretty hardcore...should i get one now this has happened?
how do i treat this...water changes needed? or whaaat?

and i will post photos when she comes out o her pot...

please help . ..

Yeah a photo would help, you should always test your water for PH, Nitrites and Nitrates, Axolotl's are very sensitive to water quality, and its always best to know if your water is okay or not.

I think once you have posted the pictures as well as the results from your water testing, people will be able to give you more accurate advice.

A water tester isnt hardcore :), just don't get the strips to test the water - because i've read a lot on the forum that they are inaccurate,
Your Axy might just be shedding its skin, but until a picture is posted - you wont know for certain :)

You need to test you water for ammonia and temperature, not just nitrite and nitrate.

How long have you had your axie and how old/big is she? What is your cleaning/water change routine? Skin issues are often water quality problems. The cut is probably just a cut.

Photos would help. You need to get a liquid test kit ASAP and check your water quality.

Thanks for replying, im ordering a api water tester kit, and it looks like she cut herself? i have no idea what on! but its healed up very fast where the skin was flaking off so all is well...

no idea what she could have cut her self on mind, silly axolotl..

I used to think the test kits were hardcore too but they really are something that every aquarium owner should have. They do last a long time and will always be able to tell you if the water has gone bad before your animals start getting sick. 10% water changes might not be enough if you have had nitrates building up in the water over time.
