Please help my axie

Hi Ganymede264,

I admit that I share your aversion to some of the things that axolotls like to eat. I bought a box of crickets once - I never want to open a box to all of those wiggling legs again! :uhoh:

Things with no legs fortunately don't bother me, though. When I feed worms, I put them in a little bowl and rinse them with water, then use a tweezers to feed them, so I don't even have to touch them. It is actually kind of funny to watch an axolotl eat a worm; looks like a child with spaghetti.

Caves can be anything under which an axolotl can fit. You can buy plastic or ceramic logs at pet shops, which are decorative, but also quite expensive. You can lay a flower pot on its side. You can use a piece of PVC pipe. You can build something out of rocks - here, you need to be very careful that the rocks are sturdy, so that they do not collapse onto your axolotl! You may find inspiration by looking at pictures of other people's tanks in the axolotl gallery.

You are right, too, that any decorations can trap dirty stuff. For this reason, you need to clean underneath and between decorations when doing your water changes. Adding some coldwater snails to your tank will help a bit with cleaning, too (and they make a nice axolotl snack, as well!).

Hi Ganymede,

Just a few suggestions for you to consider.

Hiding places - Other than pots, don't forget you can create your own cave system with some nice huge rocks, driftwood or bricks. Having plants (life or articial) also provide hiding places. Be creative!

Food source - Don't forget to quarantine your feeder fish for a month prior. Also they are more suitable as a snack/ treat rather than a staple diet. Prolonged feeding of nothing but exclusively feeder fish will cause malnutrition in your axolotl. You must provide it a staple of either axolotl pellets, bloodworms (you can buy them frozen and thaw them out), or ideally earthworms.

Regards.

At the moment, my axie is doing fine as he does eat his food (both fronzen and live ones) and his body looks alright without any infection. Just one thing, which makes me curious, is that why my axie does not make much movement, he just stays at the bottom of the tank and sometimes crawls around the place. Is this a normal behaviour of an axolotl?
Please give me some advices!

Kind regards,

If your tank is truly only 20 liters, I would guess there isn't anywhere for him to go. Not trying to be a wise guy but, your tank is as wide as your axie is long and only twice his length. In my opinion, that's not really sufficient.
