Hi all,

I have a poorly axie on my hands and have searched everywhere online for help but to no avail. Please somebody help our beloved Sherbet!

She is a 1 year old leucistic axolotol and has recently started to to swim abnormally. She spirals/rolls as she moves like she is unable to balance properly.

When on the tank floor she walks normally but her head stoops to one side. And when I look closely it looks like one of her eyes is pointing the wrong way...

Tank water was fine at oh 6.5 with 0 ammonia or nitrite.

We were going through a heat wave so the tank temps may have gotten a little high.

She is in the fridge at the minute and having daily salt baths.

She is not showing signs of stress, just can't swim normally.

Could it be an internal infection? Can anyone help us diagnose her problem and treat her?

Can you post some pictures of her? When you write a reply there is a paperclip, click that then you can attach photos from your computer. If you have a video of her swimming that would help too.
Unless she has fungus don't worry about salt baths, it may stress her out more.

Hi, thanks very much for the reply.

Attached is a picture of Sherbet. The eye on the left looks different to the right. That's the side she leans towards when walking.

The salt baths were in the hope it might help an infection if present.

Also here is a video of her swimming. I have had to add it to a zip file to upload it.

That is her sanctuary in the fridge not her tank!

In her tank she will swim along swishing her tail like normal but she spins round and loses her balance.

Her tail is not normally wavy like that shes just cheesed off with me prodding her to get her to swim i think.

Wow! That video! Did you happen to forget to dechlorinate her water? Thrashing around is a normal reaction when people have forgotten to do that.
With the side that she is favouring, does her front leg move at all? Does it look like it has been injured or dislocated at all?
Is she eating? Has she been pooping normally? I wonder if it's a gas problem, is she floating around the tank instead of staying on the bottom?

Yes her water is dechlorinated, she only moves like that because she cant swim straight, it took a few attempts to coax her into swimming to take the video and is usually calmly walking about the bowl or sitting there.

She walks about on the tank floor seemingly normally albeit with her head slanted to one side, not showing any signs of discomfort so no i don't think her leg is injured.

A big poo happened on her first night in the fridge sanctuary so she must have been eating prior to going in. She hasn't eaten since going in the fridge but apparently this is normal and due to her metabolism being slowed by the cold.

She tends not to float, but was mostly on her side before being fridged. The fridge must be helping as she is the right way up now but still cant swim straight.

Digestion doesn't seem to be an issue then. I'm really not sure what else to suggest other than keep fridging (and yes her appetite will reduce, offer her little bits of food in case she does get hungry). Hopefully someone else can jump in and help more. If I think of anything I'll let you know, but keep us updated on here on her condition.

Hi there. There are a few forums on here about parasites and infection that cause leaning and corkscrew spinning. Here is one.

Thanks for the link Tammy, that sounds exactly like what she is doing. I cant get it to work though... Do i need to do it through tapatalk or something?

We have taken her to the vet and she has been given two antibiotic injections 48 hours apart. She is in the fridge still also.

She seems unchanged, how long do antibiotics take to work?

She has not eaten in about a week too. How long can she last in the fridge without eating?

Call your vet up and ask about how soon you should see a change. How is her body condition (how much weight has she lost)?

Vet and injections were a while ago now and she still sick...

Took her out of fridge for a while to see if she would eat but wouldnt so put her back in again to slow her weight loss.

I have bought some furan-2 antibiotics to go in her water. Started them today.

Any more suggestions on how I might save her would be greatly appreciated.

I hope it's a treatable infection and not something neurological. That was one of my first thoughts but I don't know nearly enough about axolotl health to be comfortable suggesting it as an answer.
The other threads seem to point to an infection as well, though of what I'm not sure.
