Kanagawa is a prefecture in the Kanto area. So it belongs to the Kanto race. I almost never speak about races anymore, cause even between races there can be difference. For example: Pyrrhogaster from the Gunma prefecture (also a Kanto race) is very different in colour, they are more grey.

There are a handfull of hobbyists who have pyrrhogaster with locality data. You just have to know where to find them. Also I indeed have a Japanese contact. Have never been there myself, would like to, but I"m scared to fly.

Very attractive newts!
How many different kinds of C. pyrrhogaster do you have at the moment?

I have 5 different pyrrho's.

from Kanagawa prefecture (Kanto) 7.3
from Mie prefecture (Intermediate) 2.7.3
from Kagawa prefecture (Hiroshima) 0.1 (unfortunately)
sasayamae (unknown collecting locality) 2.7
unknown collecting locality 0.2 (soon I can get a male)

Yup Joost is truly a Cynops-dependent from what we can see. I must tell I like them but not close to my favourites, but always nice newts to breed. I love their larvae and their huge feathered gills. I only had 3 species and only breed 2 of those. The others were two sub-adult males so no breeding accomplished at all.

Sorry to hear about Kagawa perfecture pyrro's Joost.

Cheers,
Jorge

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
