Hello everyone, I am considering a attempt at breeding one of my leucistic axies and would be hoping to get a variety of colors if possible. So if I wanted copper, golden, or melanoid what would be the best color(s) to breed with?

I have been researching this but having trouble finding definative answers......can anyone steer me in the right direction?

I guess I should also ask.....what colors are people most interested in having? I am getting the impression that gfp is popular, should I try for gfp leucistic instead?

My leucistics have cute freckles and big bushy gills and would love to see what kind of babies they will produce. : )

You have to track back the genetic line of the parents and grandparents of your breeding axies to get an accurate idea of what offspring you'll get. Just remember that wildtype genes are dominant.

For the greatest variey of offspring you can breed a leucistic with a wild-type whose parents are wild and albino/leucistic.

Persoanlly I would always choose a leucistic for a pet. I don't see the point of GFP - I'd think someone a bit odd if I went to their house and they said 'look, my pet glows in the dark!' GFP is an artificial 'mutation' created in a lab by splicing jellyfish DNA into axies to track regeneration patterns. GFP axies are technically classed as a genetically modified organisms.

I cant help with genetics, basics of what I know is two albino parents produce albino eggs, at least if I've understood it right. Everything else is pretty much well a toss up. My friends axolotl parents who are melanoid and leucistic produced both of those and wild types. A breeder I know locally got a batch of eggs that went every direction. Wilds, golds, albinos, melanoids and leucistics cause the lineage was all over the place. Its unlikely for that to be common, but it does happen I guess.

As for the following question gfp's are extremely popular. They also go for more because theyre usually harder to come by, at least where I'm at. While some may think it odd, there's people like me that fancy the idea of having a pet that can be briefly shown off in the dark to other aquatic hobbyists, its like having one of those glow light tanks but only on occasion. If you end up with any leucistic gfp's, my friend has been wanting one for forever to go with her wild type gfp lol. Hope this helps.

If you wanted certain colours you'd have to know the grandparents of all your axies. If you can avoid it get two axies who had no wild types as parents to minimise wild-type offspring (that's what I would do at least. Every pet store has wild types in my area, not a big demand for them)

If you want copper, golden or melanoid I'd breed with a golden, copper or melanoid.

Thank you guys for your help with this, it certainly is not straightforward....especially when you cannot be certain of the lineage. I'll just have to do my best!! : )

Just want to bring this post back cause I have the wild type that both their parents and grand parent are albino , melanoid , gold, leucistic , and some GFP . They even might have some copper or purple mix in who knows they were the accident of all breed mix in. What would happen if I breed them with blue gills leucistic? I'm just curious .

My wild parents are leucistic and albino melanoid
Leucistic parents came from verity batch that has purple ( as seller claim)
Albino melanoid came from golden het copper (as seller claim) and white melanoid
