Hi all,

So I am curious which you think is better? For health I mean. If you are unaware of the difference here is a pic of the two, the first being a night crawler and the second being a Earthworm.

Any opinions? I cant decide personally. But I have a secret hate for night crawlers, until they are chopped up :kill: -Seth

AW: Question: Which are better? Night crawler or Earthworm?

In my opinion the area where the worms are collected from is more important than the question if they are night crawlers or earthworms.
And it also depends on the content of their digestive system. For example a calcareous earth in their intestine might provide some additional calcium.

My fire salamanders love all kind of worms and I feed them whatever worms I can get.
Only the uncomfortably smelling Eisenia fetida from compost heaps are not very popular with my salamanders and I only feed them if there is no other food available.

Well, lets say that you find a Night crawler and a earthworm under the same small log, and there stomach condense is the same, than which would you choose?

I think I like earthworms better, for a few reasons. I hate night crawlers until they are chopped. They are soooooo aggressive! I once fed one and then the salamander yawned and the night crawler was crawling out! Earthworms are calmer and I like the way the DONT get slime all over your hands. Plus my newts seem to like them better.

Thanks for the thread as a New Zealander I have always wondered what a night crawler was as it is not a term used here. I always pictured something more carnivorous and now I know its just a type of worm.

Earthworms for me. I can catch them in my backyard 9 months of the year. I tried bait store bought night crawlers (chopped up of course) a couple of times and results with my gang were very mixed. My Spanish Ribbed newts sometimes took them and other times spit them out. My firebelly (orientalis) would not eat them but my paddle tail ate them but then again, he eats everything. They all love earthworms though!

I also agree Seth, there is a certain disgusting factor with night crawlers for me too.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
