Questions about enternal filters/corner filters etc.

I have some questions about enternal filters/corner filters. I want to get some corner filters for my 20 gallon tank, I don't know what brand to get or what they really look like or the best place to shop for them. Can anyone help me with thiis? I want to also know how many I should have for my aquarium. I already have an overhang filter, but I am worried that it wasn't doing it's job very well because of the worm problem I had, even though I did my best to syphon out uneaten food/waste etc. Thanks

You probably don't need any sort of supplemental filtering. What kind of filter are you running now? What size tank is it rated for? Can the water flow be turned up or down, and if so, what is it currently set at?

Regardless of manufacturer, all corner filters are identicle, and none of them are very efficient. If you really feel the need to get one, buy the cheapest one you can find that is rated for your size of tank.

My filter is a Top Fin power filter that fits 20 gal tank. I have a 20 gallon, but I think the filter is lazy or something :p I turn it up on high sometimes, but I worry that the current will irritate my Axies so I keep it low sometimes. If the corner filters don't work very well, I'm not goign to invest money into them. I wanted to check with this forum before I bought any, becasue I don't know anything about them. I'll stick with my filter for now. If the worms come back, I'll get something stronger.
 
Canister filters, although expensive, are very good. If you ever plan on upgrading to a bigger tank, invest in one. Personally, I run an overhang filter on most of my tanks. I have an internal Duetto in the Triturus tank (because they can climb, and overhangs just don't work). If you wanted to get a corner filter as supplimental biological filtration, that would be okay, but I wouldn't rely on it as a main filter.
 
I agree, external canister filters are the way to go if you are going to buy a new filter.

Corner filters have their place in small tanks and hospital tanks, but in a 20 gallon that already has an over hanging filter as Bryan said, I wouldn't bother with them.
 
I have my axies (2) in a 20 high, soon to be moved to a 20 long. I use a RENA FILSTAR 1x external filter, w/spray bar. This is a powerful filter, with a large area for biological media. The spray bar has an adjustable water flow. I position the spray bar so that the water hits the back of the tank, therefor causing very little water disturbance, or movement. Since axies create a lot of waste, I have found that this type of filter works best. They are pricey, but in the long run I think you will be very happy.

I will see about the Casister filters, and I will also look into the Rena Filstar 1x filter with spray bar. If they work well, then this will be better than my usual filter, i will start putting money away for it

From what I've found, Rena makes pretty cheap canister filters, especially compared with the 'big name' ones. Now that I've seen at least one positive review, I might purchase one.

After doing research via internet, and opening every box w/every make of canister filter available to me, I went with the RENA. I use a RENA 2x on my large goldfish tank -- it works GREAT. (I've had it for about 1.5yrs now.) Also, this canister has got to be one of the easiest to maintain.

Petsmart carries the RENA, but you can also order it online. Last time I checked, it was cheaper online, even w/shipping.
 
Rena? I don't think I have ever heard of this brand. I will try an internet search. Is there a direct website to get one, Pamela? I will try and see what I can find later. For now, I really need to get some sleep. I've been up all night typing again, phew! My husband will be home in several hours, it's 7:43 am, I've been since early yesterday morning, my usual ;) Thanks you Joan and Pamela

Since I have a scanner now, I can use the money I was saving for it to go towards the Canister filter
