Hi Robertskitty,
That means it would be a good idea to keep your juvenile axies well fed and if possible do not overcrowd them. Ideally you can even keep them individually if you do not have a heap of them so you can monitor their feeding. Hunger nad feeding frenzy are often a combination for cannibalism.

(Unintentional) cannibalism usually picks up a lot when the front legs develop, I assume because the larvae can move around more strongly.

Like both Darkmaverick and blueberlin said, when the front legs develop and if they are not well fed. However, these tendencies subside at about three months. Whether because the initial flood of hormones have decreased or because their vision is a bit more developed. HOWEVER, any hungry axolotl will take a nip at another if they get hungry enough--regardless of relative size or age.

Shane douglas:with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??+1

Thorninmyside:Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation+1

Clareclare:Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?+1
