Raising Pleurodeles Waltl from eggs

Hello,

I'm considering getting some Pleurodeles Waltl eggs and would appreciate some advice on the following:

1 - How long before the larvae will feed on pellets?

2 - What is suitable for the larvae soon after hatching? I can access the following from a nearby fish shop but none of them look that small to me:

Glasworm
Daphnia
Brine shrimp
Tubifex
Small bloodworm

3 - If none of the above are suitable for newly hatched larvae, how old would they need to be to survive on the above?

I feed everything blackworms, minced at first, and larger as they grow. Until they make the switch to minced nightcrawlers, and up from there.

Just make sure they are eating. I have successfully raised a dozens by now, but my first batches failed due to empty stomach. They grow really fast. Make sure the stomach is full.

I have a few hundred larvae going now of both leucistic and normal color. They have just began to grow leg buds and are starting to take notice to frozen bloodworms. I just keep them in large tubs with some live plants in them. They do grow fast!

I raised a batch of P. waltl larvae using tubs about 12x16". By the time they reached morph, they were so large I could only keep about 6 or 8 per tub. And even with so few, they needed daily water changes because they are such pigs.

I don't envy you with trying to raise hundreds, but I wish you luck!

Thanks Jen, I am sure I probably over exaggerated the "few hundred" It sure does seem like it though. I know I hatched out at least 300, but I have lost many so I am probably down to about 100 leucistic and 100 het for leucistic. They are pigs but not cannibalistic at all to my surprise, thanks for the good luck! I have those, some dobro larvae, and just placed an order for a couple hundred axolotl eggs!! Cant wait to be overwhelmed once again lol.

Hi all,
I have raised other caudata before successfully by never p waltl. I have around 20 babies and i have fed them daphnia, but not sure if they are eating....any suggestions? Shall I use something different?

I have raised many of these I start them on osracods (try a water but) then daphnia and either blood worm or mosquito lava then on to small worms . I only use pellets if I really have nothing else(they foul the water quickly). They love live scuds but only if you have a clean source foe them. Regards KB

You can raise them the same as axolotls, there is a load of info on this site about it
