Ok so I was admiring my axolotls as you do,randomly decided to count their digits, two of them have five toes on the back and four on the front(well one may have when his arm grows back)my biggest one on the other hand only has four toes on the back and three on the front.he hasn't been chomped on like the other two had been when I got them all,he has no other abnormalities except the feet/toes/fingers.
His parents all have(I don't know which is the mum as there are 3 possibles but all 3 are "normal") the right number of toes, all the other siblings left at the lfs have the correct number.
So my question is could it be genetic or is it possible when he was just growing toes they all got eaten off and he missed the memo on how many to grow back?

Could be either. There are certainly genetic mutations that change the number of toes in animals, and if it's the same on both sides of his body it could well be genetic. Lots of mutations are recessive, so if both parents are carriers that would explain your situation. Too bad you don't know who's the mom! :)

Thanks!i wish I knew which the mum was!though if they breed and the lfs can manage to raise them I might get chance to see if it happens to another batch.
