Red Rash!!!!!!

My axolotl has a bright red rash on the top of its tail! Her tail is all curled up and i'm really worried! Does anyone know what is wrong with her!

She could be stressed. How long has she been like this and are there any other signs or symptoms? Could she have damaged her tail on anything in the tank? What is the tank temperature?

Also, what are the water parameters; ie: the readings for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate? If you don't have water test kits you will need to take a sample of water to your local petshop and get it tested. Find out what the readings/figures are for each.

Is it in uneven speckles, various shapes and sizes?
How far does it spread?

Check the parameters as Kapo says, but bear in mind it could be a nasty bruise.
One of my 'Lotl took a leap and smacked his tail on the side once - there was an odd red splatter all across the fine membrane of his tail.

If it IS bruising, keep an eye on it, and it should clear up in a week or so.
I do have a picture if you request one.

Shes been like this for 2 days now and the water temperature is 19 °C and its like a splatter it starts from the start of the tail to the tip.
Thanks

Danet is it possible for you to post a picture so we can see the colour and is the tail curled slightly at the very end? Also let us know what the readings for the tankwater is? How long have you had your axie and is the tank cycled? This might help narrow it down. I do know that when our leucs get stressed, cos of higher temps or poss. water quality/excessive filter flow (in our earlier days) then the top half of their tail/fin gets reddish/pinkish.

Has it faded or gone away a little bit since you saw it? It might be a bruise just like Amber said. My axie headbutted the side of the tank once and got a bit of a bruise but it went away.

Yea it has faded away the last time i saw her LISA but im on holiday and my mate's looking after her so i don't no if its gone completely.
Thanks

HI, my axolotl also has a red rash on his tail i am really worried, his tail isnt curled or anything though- i only just got him so i am paranoid as, and also he has got peeling skin is this normal?

Lana, what is the tank temp., how long have you had him, and did you cycle your tank (and how long has the tank been setup b4 you added your axie)? What is the size your tank and Do you have a water test kit to test for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate?

no i dont, but i will look into it i am calling the vet in 5 mins (as soon as they open). he used to have a really small tank but i got him a 2 and a half foot tank, and he has been fine until this popped up, his red rash has gone as i took the heater out but i am so worried i got him on the 9th september 06 and have enjoyed every moment of having him i just dont want him to die.

Lana, you've now obviously worked out axies don't need heaters. They prefer cooler temps (from 5 deg cel. to 20 deg cel.) when it starts rising above 22-24 deg cel. you will have to start cooling it down. Get a thermometer, if you don't have one.

Also, sounds like your tank may be cycling, esp. since you changed him to new one recently. You will need to test the water regularly for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate regularly (every few days) while cycling. See: http://www.caudata.org/cc/articles/cyclingEDK.shtml If you don't have test kits to test the tankwater then take a sample, asap to your petshop and get them to test and give you the figures of the reading. If the ammonia and/or nitrite readings are too high, which can cause skin to peel/shrivel or "burn", you will need to do a 20-30% waterchange to bring water back into safer levels for your axie. If ur unsure what your readings mean, post a new thread here and ask.

Thankyou so much for all the help!!! i done a 1/3 water change and all of a sudden this "skin" came off him and i scooped it up with the net quickly and got it all out and he seems better and his face expression has gone back to normal, (i rinsed the net with hot water heaps)
