My axolotl is just big enough for these and he gets them down fine, but he always throws them up. I've read that they secrete a bitter substance under stress, and that soaking them in water can help. Maybe I'm not soaking them long enough? What do you recommend?

I heard that they do secrete a foul odor, but I've only rinsed mine, not soaked them. Maybe I should try this too? However, I think it may be inevitable, as it's recommended to try and avoid cutting them, as they smell even WORSE, which I think they end up tasting regardless. I usually just try finding the super small ones in my tub hoping that he'll just gulp it down and not think twice.

But, some axolotl's take to red wigglers, some just can't eat them. If you're not seeing any improvement, I'd say try some earthworms-nightcrawlers, and just cut those to the size needed. Best of luck.

One of my guys downs them and the other will try one and then spit it out and ignore them. I guess some are pickier than others. The one that wont eat them will eat chopped nightcrawlers, blackworms or frozen bloodworms.

They're probably too big, and that's why he's throwing them back up. Try cutting them into pieces first.

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
