Regarding modifications to the forum

Err...now why didn't I think if that...hmm...

Btw, the scrolling thing above was that I wouldn't like to have to scroll up or down to get to a future home button. I'd rather have one that follows the screen or something similar. Hrm. No pressure. Just some input...

Hmmm...sure is nice and roomy in here, but I'd much prefer to see the "forum users in the last hour" feature present at the bottom of each page on the forum, rather than just on the main forum page. Isn't that where it was before? Or was it just my imagination....

John, would it be possible to re-add the chat status/ recent member list back tot he bottom of the page? I tend to miss out on people I am trying to get ahold of.

I too miss the frame which shows who's online and who's chatting. At the bottom of the main page (ie. out of sight) just isn't the same. The world map showing where everyone lives also slows down the loading of the main page quite significantly for me.

I must restate that the member status really should come back and take the place of the map. Every time I go back to the main page I have to wait much too long to get even the ability to make my cursor work again.

I agree with ester and jeff. Even though I am on cable, the page takes a significant amount of time to load due to the map. Could the map be replaced with just a link?

Im in the same boat as Terry, Jeff, and Ester. I have highspeed and its really slow for me to. A link for frappr would be great idea!

OK, the map is gone and now it's a link at the top of the topics page.

Regarding the "who is in the chat/who is on the forum" issue, I am really against putting a frame back at the bottom of the screen unless there's an overwhelming call for it as there was for the map issue. So if you feel strongly about having that option in the frame visible all the time, let us know here.

I fall into the "feel strongly about it" category

When that feature was available at the bottom of every page, I liked to casually glance down and see who is active or who has been around, but now, without it, I don't feel like making a conscious effort to find out by returning to the forum's front page again and again as if it's something that really matters. As for chat, if I'm able to easily spot somebody I want to talk with in there, I might pop in even though I'm doing other things, but otherwise I wouldn't normally make my way to the chatroom.

I don't make use of what's at the bottom of the page now: Topics | Last Day | Last Week | Tree View | Search | User List | Help/Instructions | Program Credits --most of which is at the top anyway.

I much prefer this non-frame version of the forums. It makes it easier to navigate as I can now use the backspace key more easily to go backwards and can avoid the mouse. A tabbed browsers like Firefox would allow people to keep one tab always on the homepage and make checking much easier for those people.

I agree with Tim and Ester. I don't know much about web design or frames/non frames, but I do know that not having a info bar telling me who's around and whos chatting has led me to miss people that I actually need tp talk to, and it probably keeps poeple from knowing that I am there trying to get ahold of them. Can we do something that doesn't use frames and still shows the users?

Would it be possible to make this frame with chat and user info optional? Something users can choose in their settings?
Not everyone uses chat and this info is really only necessary to facilitate the chat room users.

Ester's plan of an option of frames and no-frames seems like a decent proposal to me, but I don't know how much backend work that would require form John. Barring that one possible flaw the option to choose the frame with the chat info on it seems like an excellent compromise.

I do think the chatroom gets more "traffic" when the list appears at the bottom of all the forum pages. It would be nice to have back, but not a huge deal.

I don't know if this helps anyone, but I added the chatroom monitor to the main page of CC, right above the photo of the month:

I can give people the option of loading up a framed version of the forum. However, this will not be native to the forum's internal programming (and I don't plan on making it native either). Any more opinions before I make a decision?

Could you translate "this will not be native to the forum's internal programming" for non-technos like myself?

What would be the downside to using the uploaded framed version instead of the other one?

would it be possible to put the chatroom info at the top of the page?
