Regeneration of eyes

Hello all,

Will an axolotls eye regenerate after injury? I tried to search for a previous post with a similar situation, but no luck.

This evening i noticed that one of my axolotls eyes is totally missing. Not even sure what he could have caught it on. The injury is clean, so clean in fact it looks as though it has totally healed over without a left eye.

What do you guys and girls think?

The eye wont grow back but the skin wil grow over it nicely

Could it have been that the eye was never there in the first place?

No he has lost the eye while in tank, when i first got him i particularly remember noticing his beautiful eyes. It is a shame, but i suppose there is not much i can do.

If it healed without complications, that's a good thing. Some parts of salamander eyes do regenerate, but it's questionable whether the entire eye could regrow. I wouldn't completely rule it out, but it seems unlikely.

What are your thoughts on axie sight? I know they can see sinking pellets falling in the water, but would you say that they rely on a sense of smell more? I am just curious as I have an axie who for some time has been living with a cataract.

Did it get sucked out by anything?

It would be very interesting to see if it can regenerate an entirely lost eye. They are reputed (or known, I'm not sure) for their ability to regenerate parts of damaged organs (including eyes?) But I wouldn't know if they can completely regenerate an entirely lost one.

I need to look into that. Keep an eye (no pun intended) on it to see how it goes.

I believe that there is an eyeless mutant of axolotls. This would suggest that they can feed and survive without eyesight. They use both vision and smell in finding food.
