I got a message from a friend who works at the pet store (sigh) yesterday, and was sent pictures of little tiny baby axolotls that were being housed with crabs, fish, and also in a gravel tank. I was, and still am, strapped on cash until the weekend is over, but I couldn't just NOT do anything. So I ended up buying one of the babies in order for it to have a chance. My town is very small and pet stores haven't even seen axolotls before, until I started sharing pictures of mine on social media. It really hurts my heart to think about all of the unknowledgable people trying to get their hands on these creatures simply because they're cute.

Just figured I would share a small story with pictures of the little one that I was able to give a chance. I adopted the cute little golden albino baby.

I'm sure that the little golden albino is already more comfortable than before.
It might be worth sharing the following links with the pet shop, in the hope that they change their practices.

Caudata Culture Articles - Aquarium Substrates

Best of luck with your new little one, and please keep us posted on progress.

I am friends with the woman who runs the fish section, she took my advice very seriously and did what she could. The specific pet store has rules against removing gravel and plants, so that's already enough to kill them. They did, however, move the axolotls to their own tank and started feeding them frozen bloodworms instead of fish food.

You've done as much as you can, and at least they have their own tank now. Well done.

A pet shop near me tried to tell me that I didn't need to cycle my tank or remove chlorine from my tank. I'm so glad I got advice from a proper breeder who put me on the right track. Some people just don't know enough to be dishing out advice to other people. Well done for getting them in their own tank. They could try using large stones instead of gravel. Maybe that's a way around their rules.
