Safe substrates

For a terestrial set up. I've always just used coconut fiber and compressed moss blocks that expands in water. But I've heard people on here saying that the coconut fiber should be mixed with some type of soil?
Well I was wondering what types/brands would be safe or that you guys prefer to use. And like what's the difference between top soil, potting mix, garden soil and all that jazz. I know it should be organic and have no added fertalizers but that's pretty much it. Thanks for your help!
