One thinks of salamandra, you think of winter dormancy -

If the hiding places are easily accessible to the salamanders, then the animals are active at 2 ° Celsius. Hibernation is made inevitable when it is colder than 2 °C.
There are spring creeks, which does not freeze. The larvae are sold throughout the year.
On the night of January 1, we have seen over 70 salamander (midnight).
That's my experience over many years.
Even snow is no barrier when temperatures exceed 2 ° C.
There are good winter nights in Germany, if you could only see it,
best wishes, ummi

I have a group that I keep in an outdoor enclosure, I was worrying about them during a cold spell. The air temperature was just over freezing, but they where merrily out looking for food.

Re: AW: Re: Salamandra and winter

fantastic. Is this in the Solling? The German woods are so beautiful with their stately oak and beech trees...and to find some salamanders among them would just instantly kill me with an overdose of bliss.

My terrestris and gallacia hibernated in their burrows through the whole of last winter and I didn't see them on the surface again until the air temperature was regularly going above about 9C during the day. Their tanks have a 25cm thick layer of coconut fibre that they burrow into, so there's a lot of underground space for them to spend their time in.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
