Have decided to join as I had an Axolotl, Jiggy that I loved so much and he died. I never thought I could become so attached to anything but there was definitely something special between us, he would eat out of my hand and always knew when I was there. I brought him in January he was small though the pet shop could not tell me how old he was, he was so spoilt and I dont know what went wrong, one minute he was fine and the next he was dead. I struggled with this immensely and cried for days. I need to understand more about these amazing creatures as I really would like another one :(

Hi Kaz, welcome to the forum.

Sorry to hear about that but hope this hasn't put you off having another axolotl, they're very interesting creatures. And as we've discovered one is never enough.

Pop in and have a look and read of www.axolotl.org as well as the Axolotl part of the forum under the Help and Basic Care Questions section www.caudata.org/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=48 you might find things that could explain why Jiggy died or help you understand more about axolotls.

There are very few petshops that actually have any sort of knowledge about axolotls, apart from "they can be fed every few days" and "don't require much care/maintenance".

jiggy

Thanks for the words of advise I really would like another one I just need to give it some more time. I still cannot believe how attached I became to him. Is there anyway of working out how old he was judging by his side, I dont even know whether it was male or female!

Jiggy

When I used to change his water which was completely twice a week I would use a net to take him out of the tank and put him into a bucket until his tank was ready, could this have harmed him???
