I am thing of getting a few baby axolotls. What is the best set up for them?

How young are they? The ideal set up will be different for different ages.

Congrats! Welcome to the addiction haha. How many babies and approx how large are they? General rule is 10 gallons per axie but i personally think that is too small and cramped. They can get as large as 12 inches or so , so keep that in mind. I keep 4 of my adults in a 40 breeder, which has a great footprint for axies. Get a tank that is wider and longer as opposedto tall. Basically the more floor space the better! Decorate with plants, hides, and sand. You could also go bare bottom. Get a good filter and block the water flow so that it is not too strong. Make sure to keep a thermometer on the tank and never let it go above 72. Hope that helps!

If the axies are under 5 inches then it's best to not use sand so they won't swallow it.

They would be about 2-3 inches. I have a 50 gal wide tank that will be their final setup once they are grown.

2 or 3 that small could easily go in a 5 to 10 gallon bare bottom with a sponge filter, or you could keep them in Tupperware with 100% daily water changes. I don't use any substrate until they reach 5 inches, and I would avoid a filter with current until they reach that size also. Mine do really well on a diet of live blackworms, thawed bloodworms, and chopped earthworm at that size. Ask the breeder what they have been feeding, and try to offer the same for the first couple days. Good luck with your new babies!

one important thing about the set up might be the separation, they might be too small for carnavirous behavior but i would be on the safe side and keep them separated for now. or an idea, u said u had a 50g for when they get older? u could get mesh and have a separate section for each, if u get 2-3 thaats more than 10g for axy and i think its an interesting way to go about it. might be an easier upkeep

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
