He/she is not bloated, belly has always been this round.
Thank you.

Looks female to me. Some might argue male but my female looked like this. Then she laid eggs!

I would guess female. Some females do still have a visible cloaca. The small size and shape of its body suggest to me that it's more likely female, but the only ways to tell for sure would be to take it to a vet or to have it breed.

Can you say why? I thought she was a girl until someone said just that.
The body shape seems longer and slimmer than I'd expect to see on a female no seems shorter bodied and more rounded. I've have males in the past that are not so well endowed. Please do bare in mind I could be wrong, but this is from.My observations.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
