How can you tell what sex your Axxie is?

My is a two yr old wild type.

He has two sort of mound at the base of his tail? does this mean he is a boy?

Axolotls become sexually mature once they are about a year old.
Males will have a pronounced bump in the cloacal region (that's underneath, between the hind legs, in case you're wondering).
Males will also tend to be skinnier and have longer tails than females. Females usually have shorter, wider heads than males. Also, the female's belly will appear to "get fat" as she begins producing eggs.

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
