Hi everyone! Long time lurker first time poster.

So, I'm looking to get a second axolotl since I've upgraded to a 40 gallon 3ft long tank. Thing is, I don't know the sex of my lil water sausage Tofu. I've been referring to him as a male but lately I've began to realise he may in fact be a she!

He's 11 inches long, really round. My friend likes to call him fat but his stomach is the same width as his head so he is a good weight.

I know that it's hard to sex an axolotl before sexual maturation with black finger tips being the main sign of that. But if any, more experienced people, can maybe tell me what way he's currently leaning I'd really appreciate it.

My other issue is, ideally, I'd like to raise another baby like I did Tofu. But it's a real 50/50 chance they'll be the same sex. If they're the opposite, I don't have room for a second tank. Rescue axolotls have crossed my mind or buying adults. But I'm in Scotland and they don't sell them in pet stores near me.

Again, any help would be appreciated!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
