Sexing & breeding?

I recently purchased two axolotls. They haven't been shipped yet, but I've been told they're too young to tell the sex. At what point should I separate them? Is it safe to wait until I know if they're a boy & girl or same sex? I don't want them to accidentally breed. Is it possible for them to breed before I can determine the sex?

You can usually tell sex at around a year. If you have a male, they develop a large bump at the base of the tail.

Thanks but I already knew that. My question was about whether or not I should separate them since I don't know the gender...

Axolotls aren't usually sexually mature until at least 12 months up to 16 months old. If you are concerned about not wanting them to breed I would separate them at about 7-8" long. Some axolotls mature faster than others, so age isn't the best determination, size is best.
