Does anyone know if the cloacal sexing method works on juvenile Tylototriton? I have two 2019 offspring from Seth's (@sde 's) breeding which are now about 3.75 inches from head to tail tip. Externally one individual is considerably more heavily built, and the exterior of the cloaca is slightly different in terms of shape and pigmentation. The confusion arises when the cloaca is slightly opened, as per images on the tylo sexing thread here they both distinctly appear male. Another keeper with 3 individuals from the same breeding also reported their newts appear all male when using the cloaca to determine sex. I am currently considering trading to another keeper with a female if the presumption these are both male proves true, but I would like confirmation beforehand. Photos of both newts are attached below, and photos of the cloacae will be provided soon.

I agree with your assessment - both male.

Hopefully the breeder didn't sort the offspring by size, color, or any other criteria. This can result in messed up sex ratios, as all the smaller ones, or darker/lighter ones, might be male. This kind of thing is a problem with some species, but I don't know if it's a problem for Tylos or not.

Yeah honestly I've heard both guesses from others and I'm thinking I just need to wait for maturity. I've talked to a few other keepers with these newts siblings that emerged from the water in late 2018/early 2019 and all appear male based on the cloaca

As a quick update, these newts will be staying with me. I'd like to find a female for them if they do turn out male. I'm also keeping Tylototriton shanjing now and have five juveniles which are all doing fantastic.

Wow, I can’t believe you found someone selling these. Croc newts are a holy grail herp in my book.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
