The courtship of salamanders is fascinating and quite complex. It is definitely a mix of derived and ancestral characteristics. Thanks for sharing this great paper.
 
What I really like it's how change the behavior of the different species. There are species where the presence of different males and males fighting stimulate the reproduction. Whereas, there are species like in C. ensicauda where there is the spermatophore retention. What I belive is that the males avoid to use their spermatophore because they just think that it can be wasted. Just two words, wonderful animals
